“ Fedora I used to run IT , how ever I Long ran Gentoo On my home machine it overlays well on a straight debian install gentoo cam out of debian but used the bsd style app installer and the package management means no deps worries , and its pkg manager via pkg..use means clean ./configure make every time
though getting a gentoo box up takes allot more effort since it compiles all updates but means that nearly never are their broken packages.
but your project sounds like fun ”
